Now That The Light Is Fading (EP)

Maggie Rogers is thriving right now, and I love it. It’s been a year since the release of her EP Now That The Light Is Fading, and she didn’t just walk back through the front door of club ‘The Cat’s Pyjamas’ oh no… she kicked it off its hinges and came in accompanied by a mariachi band. Honestly, I can’t keep up with all her amazing, brand spanking new releases.

This girl has discovered the recipe for perfection. With her authentic and totally mesmerising vocals, she has an ear for what compliments it rather well. From glass bottles, mourning doves and finger snaps, to overheard conversations in Morocco; Rogers finds unique and experimental samples to produce some total jams. The folktronica vibe, along with Rogers’ beautifully honest lyrics, her songs feel incredibly universal; with messages that will make sense to people at all different stages of life… and that’s not easy to do. At 24, Rogers feels wise beyond her years. I don’t know what she’s putting on her cereal in the morning, but I could sure use some.

Favourite track  – Ok, kind of cheating here, but for lyrics I’d have to go for Alaska; the epic song that left Pharrell Williams speechless. However, my own personal fave off the EP would have to be Dog Years. This song has a real warmth to it that I just love, with plenty of changes throughout that will keep you tuned in.

My favourite track not on the EP – I’ve actually been listening to her new stuff pretty religiously… so my favourite track changes daily. Today however, it’d have to be Fallingwater. It’s really something. The visuals in the music video are also what you’d expect from a person with synesthesia like Rogers; the feeling of the song matching the colours in the footage. Pretty cool.

Listen to Give A Little too, because the chorus will get you moving and grooving.

Rogers’ favourite track not on her album – When asked what album she’d take for a week alone in an isolated cabin, Rogers said:

“I’ll take Joni Mitchell’s Blue so that I can have quiet time and think, and I will take Our Love by Caribou so I can dance by myself.”

Favourite Lyrics –

And I walked off you. And I walked off an old me – Alaska

Blue as the sky above the lake and blue the water flowing. White birth drooping on the shore, her leaves of emerald glowing – Color Song

Hold on, I thought that I could take it from here. Oh, I thought that I was gone and I’m cleared – Fallingwater

If I was who I was before, then I’ be waiting at your door. But I cannot confess I am the same – Give A Little

I was walking through icy streams that took my breath away. Moving slowly through westward water over glacial plains – Alaska
